A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas was published in May 2015 under Bloomsbury. I have to say, this book swept me off my feet, and I knew it was coming. The second I heard Sarah was going to come out with a new book, I had already decided it would be one of my favorites. But even knowing I would love it, I tried to go into the book as unbiased as possible—that didn’t really work out. I sat there and compared ACOTAR to the Throne of Glass series (Sarah’s other works!) and I realized I couldn’t go through the book unbiasedly (and by compare I mean compare in a good way). I’m quite simply at a loss for how much I love ACOTAR (guys please I went to go and pick up an early copy even though I had another one preordered) and it was just perfect and stunning. I’d highly highly highly recommend this book to anyone who loves steamy romances, Fae (or should I say hot Fae men), or well written fantasy books. Now, for a little nonspoiler review, I’ll admit that there were a few parts in the book that were a bit cliché, although in my opinion it didn’t take anything away from the book at all. Maas just has a beautiful way with words and she really knows how to get you right in the feels—be sure to have something close by that you can throw and cuddle (and maybe a box of tissues for the intense feels that go on in case you get too emotional at how great the book is) while you read the book. So read read read read and read the book! If you haven’t read it, go on, leave, read it, and come back! If you’ve read it, continue on with the review and then discuss with me! -Talia A thrilling, seductive new series from New York Timesbestselling author Sarah J. Maas, blending Beauty and the Beast with faerie lore. When nineteen-year-old huntress Feyre kills a wolf in the woods, a beast-like creature arrives to demand retribution for it. Dragged to a treacherous magical land she only knows about from legends, Feyre discovers that her captor is not an animal, but Tamlin—one of the lethal, immortal faeries who once ruled their world. As she dwells on his estate, her feelings for Tamlin transform from icy hostility into a fiery passion that burns through every lie and warning she's been told about the beautiful, dangerous world of the Fae. But an ancient, wicked shadow grows over the faerie lands, and Feyre must find a way to stop it . . . or doom Tamlin—and his world—forever. Summary via Goodreads OH MY GOD HOT DAMN
I really can’t tell you how many times I said that and screamed out loud while reading this book. I literally sat down right after I bought it and finished it in just a couple of hours. Oops. I’m already planning another reread of it after I read a few other books—I’m feeling a bit deprived. It’s been like two weeks since I last read the book after all. Now, onto the characters! So I’m going to start with Rhysand, because HOT DAMN that is one smoking Fae where can I buy one please. I have no idea why Feyre was so reluctant to get into a contract with Rhys because I’d love to be in a contract with him :)))))))) I absolutely loved Rhys (and yes I know a lot of people are mixed about him) and to be honest I’m not sure if I love him for all the wrong reasons, all the right reasons, or what, but I’m sure his fanbase is going to be as big as Rowan’s from TOG if not bigger??? I mean mhmmm book two is going to be funnnn. Feyre (dude the way her name is pronounced is the coolest thing ever okay) is just a badass female character and I love her so much! She’s not as badass as Celaena (I’M SORRY I KEEP MAKING TOG REFERENCES I AM SO SORRY I CAN’T HELP IT) but she’s pretty damn badass in her own way and I love how she still has a soft side to her, which comes in the form of her art. OH MY GOD HER ART so that one scene Tamlin takes her to the art room and she’s just in shock and that was just beautiful ughhh Feylin is such a beautiful couple. But I love how she has something to keep her grounded, and her relationships with everyone are just beautiful and how her emotions are so clearly displayed. I loved it when she was mad at her family after spending all that time painting and forgetting about everything and the pure emotion she had was perfect. I also loved her relationship with her sisters (NESTA YESSSSS) and overall Feyre was just such a great character to read from. I really want book two to read more about her. And those trials she went through? Damn. When she killed those two fey I was sitting there gnawing at my nails and I was feeling the suspense and man this book T_T And dude Feyre and Lucian have the best relationship ever I love their bickering and sarcastic comments and everything is just perfect about this novel. TAMLIN URGH Tamlin is perfection and I just want to hug him tightly and never let him go (please don’t kill me Feyre) bUT DAMN IS HE HOT. I lovedddd the scene during the Calanmai when Feyre snuck out and Tamlin wasn’t himself and he when he bit her and man the sexual tension during the scene right after that was so fricken great these two were meant to be. I really felt pain in my heart during the time that Tamlin was with Amarantha (oh god get her away from all my babies please) and theN WHEN FEYRE HAD TO STAB HIM OH MY GOD but then his anger after everything and ooooh. To be honest I really just need book two I need to know how he’s going to deal with the whole contract/deal thing between Feyre and Rhys and yes tension good. I also adored Lucian (though not as much as other people I AM SO SORRY I FELL IN LOVE WITH RHYS) although I have to admit Lucian is a hella good choice and all you children have not chosen wrong. The relationships in this book were just really perfect and all of the characters left me with a strong impression. To narrow down a few of my favorite scenes, I definitely loved the scene where Tam and Feyre were swimming in the pool of starlight because that was hella awesome and fantastic. The part where Lucian was “hypothetically” telling Feyre how to catch the Suriel—I cracked up so hard. And then when Alis told Feyre not to listen to Lucian because all she should have done was offer the Suriel a new robe—I pretty much lost it and died laughing. I also really liked (as stated above) the Calanmai night. When I really started wanting to throw my book though, was when Feyre actually went along with what Tamlin said and left him and dIDN’T SAY I LOVE YOU AND BY THAT POINT I WAS SCREAMING AND YELLING AT MY BOOK but we did get to see her family and Nesta being a badass so that part wasn’t all that bad. The riddle part of the trial...hahaha, maybe I’m just dumb but I actually wasn’t able to guess it but it made so much sense when I read it and I was like ohhhh I feel stupid so there was that. Also Feyre is now a High Fae!!! How cool is that omg I want book two to see how everything pans out and osgj;skgj;sg’srg This book was so perfect and I don’t really have the words to describe it and this really wasn’t a review if I’m being honest (and I am) and it really was just me fangirling over everything. Favorite Quote (or one of them): ‘“Because when the legends get written, I didn’t want to be remembered for standing on the sidelines. I want my future offspring to know that I was there, and that I fought against her at the end, even if I couldn’t do anything useful.”’ Pg. 413 So comment below and fangirl with me or hit me up on twitter @dontkillabiblio or on tumblr @starthieves (but make sure to address it to me, Talia, although I’m the only one who’s read ACOTAR out of our group so far) so we can discuss and cry over the perfection of Sarah J. Maas’s literature.
