What if all the crushes you ever had found out how you felt about them…all at once? Lara Jean Song keeps her love letters in a hatbox her mother gave her. They aren’t love letters that anyone else wrote for her; these are ones she’s written. One for every boy she’s ever loved—five in all. When she writes, she pours out her heart and soul and says all the things she would never say in real life, because her letters are for her eyes only. Until the day her secret letters are mailed, and suddenly, Lara Jean’s love life goes from imaginary to out of control. Amazon Summary This was recommended to me by my fellow bibliomaniacs, and it does not disappoint. Lara Jean (love the name, by the way) is a very well-developed character that is very family-oriented but still becoming of a normal high school girl. This sounds a bit like a gushy romance, but I can assure you that it is not--it is written from a very realistic point of view and the main characters are all very relatable. This book is cleverly and amazingly earmarked by its complexity and the emotional depth of the characters. Overall, I'd say around an 8/10 for this book. I am very much looking forward to the sequel, P.S. I Still Love You, coming out May 26th, 2015! Read on for spoilers! -Mallory Peter is introduced as kind of a jerk, which I think is a very good part of his development as a character--he seems to soften as the book goes on and we are wondering wether it is because he is actually getting softer or Lara Jean is getter softer to him. We find out that, at least, the latter is true.
I didn't really ever care for Josh. He's a good character, sure, it's just me, personally--he always seems just a tiny bit evil, like he's going to (metaphorically, of course) stab you in the back any second. But I do like Margot and Josh together. I think Margot reminds me of me a little bit; I sometimes feel like such a control freak, so I really related to her character, and her worries about her sisters. Even though she's really more of a static character, the author goes into quite a bit of depth with her, and you've got to love a character with dimensions. :) For the plot, I thought it progressed at a good pace--enough happened that it was intriguing and interesting, between Peter and Lara Jean at a party to him kissing her because Josh is there. I think, too, that their "agreement" is very interesting and although I've never heard of things like that in real life, I feel like if it did happen it would definitely be like this. The writing style is amazing. I could feel Lara Jean's voice, which makes me think that Lara Jean is based off of the author, or at least someone close to her. You can always tell the difference between a completely fictional character and one with even a few aspects that are similar to a person the author knows well. That's all for now. Thanks for reading, and feel free to comment suggestions! -Mallory
